Grade 12 standards in reading focus on college and career readiness. This includes acquiring the skills needed to make inferences about informational texts, particularly where the text presents information that might lead to uncertain conclusions about its meaning (a valuable skill for both career and college applications). Additionally, twelfth-grade readers must be able to critically analyze how characters develop over the course of a literary work. The following reading comprehension tips will help students develop these skills. Use these tips on top of weekly practice using reading comprehension worksheets.
Making inferences about an author’s intent can be difficult, so guided tours of readings are a great tool to use. Provide students with a passage from a piece of literature in which you’ve underlined various sentences. Work with readers as a group to discuss each underlined section, reviewing what the author wrote and then asking students to guess what the author might have meant in each underlined sentence. This activity can be amended to examining underlined words. Doing so simplifies the process and helps struggling readers practice vocabulary skills and inferential skills.
When reading literature, have students list adjectives that describe a character as they read. Students maintain their list over the course of their reading, and when the novel is completed, they can review the adjectives they’ve listed to see how the character has changed. To enhance this activity, ask readers to infer why the author chose to have the character change the way they did.
To prepare students for careers after high school, find ways to connect their readings to potential careers. For example, students that are interested in becoming a tradesperson might be encouraged to read technical manuals related to their particular trade of interest. Exposing students to career-related materials can help build career-related skills and understanding while also providing them with practice in reading highly specific texts in an area of interest to them.
